Tropical Sail Loft is Sint Maarten's established sail loft, founded in 1996 by Ernst Looser — a fully qualified German-trained sailmaker who completed his apprenticeship in 1989. Based in the big red building at Lagoon Marina, Wellington Road #35, Cole Bay (top floor, next to FKG Rigging), the loft occupies 3,200 sq ft with a raised floor to handle the largest sails. Serves dinghies through to superyachts and cruise ships. As North Sails agents for Saint-Martin / Sint Maarten, they supply new sails with fast delivery via SXM's duty-free status and international air links. The loft's signature machine offers 900mm underarm clearance — among the most powerful sail sewing machines available. Also stocks 700 yards of Sunbrella plus adhesives, zippers and canvas fabrics. Dinghy dock, car park, and electric hoist on-site.

  Ernst took great care of my dodger needs. I had been in the USVIs when shopping for a quote for new strata glass and wasn’t happy with what I found. We had reached out prior to arriving in SXM and Ernst immediately remembered our needs. He took the time to come visit the boat on anchor to provide a quote and give feedback on the project. They were able to do the work in time for our departure. The craftsmanship was excellent and better than I expected. The price was fair and less than what I had budgeted for.
